About Tillandsia diaguitensis

Tillandsia diaguitensis is a Tillandsia from the dry hills of northern Argentina and Paraguay. It grows along a short stem with stiff, narrow grey leaves, and it stays compact.

The flowers are white, large for the plant, and fragrant. The scent is citrus-like, and one plant in bloom perfumes a room.

It does not bloom every year. When it does, the flowers are worth the wait, and plants are currently not in bloom.

We grade it from 2-inch smalls to 7-inch larges. At 50 cents it is one of the cheapest fragrant species we grow.

This is the regular form. Our large form is a separate listing at least twice the size, with a longer flower stalk. Stock the regular form for volume and the large form for display.

Growing Tillandsia diaguitensis: Care Guide

Dry Argentine hills mean sun, cool nights and little rain. Treat it as xeric: bright light, infrequent soaks and fast drying. A cool, dry, bright winter rest is what triggers bloom. Kept dry over winter and given a few weeks of cool nights, plants set buds for spring, and a tray of them in flower will scent a whole shop. Overwatering in winter is the one way to lose it, so err on the side of misting when the weather is cool and damp.

  • Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
  • Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
  • Drying: Invert and shake. Stiff leaves drain fast.
  • Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
  • Temperature: 35°F to 95°F. It tolerates brief light frost.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
  • Mounting: Glue or wire to wood. It suits small holders and shells.
  • Pups: Pups along the stem after bloom.
