About Tillandsia bandensis
Tillandsia bandensis is a miniature from Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and southern Brazil. Each rosette is about 3 inches across, with narrow grey leaves, and the plant clumps into mounds.
The flowers are the point. They are vibrant purple, large for the plant, and fragrant. A clump in bloom carries dozens at once and scents the air around it.
It grows along short stems and branches, so a clump becomes a rounded cushion. Old clumps are dense enough to sell as specimens.
We offer small clumps of two or three plants and massive specimen clumps. Singles are rarely worth separating; the clump is the product.
Bandensis is a plant for the fragrant display and for the collector. It is small, it is cheap, and in bloom it outperforms plants ten times its price.
Growing Tillandsia bandensis: Care Guide
It grows in dry scrub and on rocks, and it is tough. Give it bright light, let it dry fully, and it will bloom every year. Dense clumps hold water in the middle, so shake them well and hang them where air moves through.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Shake hard from several angles. Hang to drain.
- Airflow: Good airflow, especially for large clumps.
- Temperature: 35°F to 95°F. It tolerates brief light frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding increases flower count.
- Mounting: Wire the clump and hang it, or glue small clumps to cork.
- Pups: Constant. Never divide a good clump; sell it whole.
