About the wooden block planter
The small handcrafted wooden block planter is a locally made cedar block with three drilled holes for air plants. It is a rectangle about 8 inches long and 1.75 inches wide. Each hole measures about 1 inch across and 1 inch deep.
We paint the wood with a weathered, rustic wash-off finish. In addition, we offer several colours: turquoise, white, orange, hot pink, black and brown, and olive green. Natural brown comes with square or rounded edges.
Cedar is light, and it also resists rot and insects naturally. That is why it is the right wood for a planter that will see splashes for years.
At $3 the planter holds three plants, so the finished piece costs a dollar a plant in hardware. It stands on a desk or a windowsill on its own, and it needs no assembly.
For a shop the block planter is a three-plant display that ships flat, stocks in a stack and sells as a set. In addition, the colour range lets a buyer match a store palette or a season.
Using the wooden block planter with air plants
Set one small plant in each hole. For example, use ionantha in three forms for a mixed row, or three of one kind for a uniform look. The holes are blind, so never pour water into them. Instead, lift each plant out to soak it, shake it, let it dry and then set it back. Keep the cedar itself dry, because the wash-off finish fades if you soak the block. Bright indirect light suits both the plants and the paint. Also rotate the plants occasionally so each side gets light. After all, a block on a windowsill lights the plants from one direction only.
- Fits: Three small plants with bases under 1 inch, for example ionantha, scaposa, small stricta or funckiana.
- Mounting: Set them in the holes. They need no glue.
- Watering: Remove the plants to soak, and keep the block dry.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer during the soak.
- Placement: Desk or windowsill in bright indirect light.
- Care of the planter: Wipe dry. Also keep it out of strong sun, since the finish fades.
