About the grape wood trunk
The grape wood trunk is a section of old grapevine trunk, twisted and gnarled by decades of growth. Many pieces are partly hollow, so they work as natural pots, while others are solid and better for plants set on top.
We sell two sizes, mini and large. Large pieces average about 4 to 6 inches tall and 3 to 5 inches wide. Because this is a natural product, shape and size vary a great deal, and not all pieces are round.
We freeze every piece for seven days before it ships, so it arrives insect free without any chemical treatment.
Shipping note: checkout does not include shipping for this wood, because it costs more than the website calculates. Instead, it ships by UPS Ground, and we email a separate invoice before it leaves. We ship once you pay that invoice, so please settle it promptly to avoid delay.
For a shop, a grape trunk is a centrepiece rather than a holder. Fill the hollow with two or three plants, or set one large silver plant on top, and it becomes a plant sculpture that sells as a finished piece. The ideas are endless.
Using the grape wood trunk with air plants
First, look at the piece and decide whether the plants go inside or on top. For a hollow piece, set plants into the cavity and let the rim hold them. For a solid piece, wire plants to the top with Tillandsia Wire, or glue small ones with E-6000 Tillandsia Glue. Grape wood is dense and dries slowly, so never let water pool in a hollow. Lift plants out to soak them, shake them, and let both plants and wood dry before you reassemble. Alternatively, mist lightly in place. Keep the piece in bright indirect light and off a damp surface.
- Fits: Two to four plants, for example ionantha, caput-medusae, harrisii or a small xerographica on top.
- Mounting: Set inside the hollow, or wire and glue on top.
- Watering: Remove plants to soak. Do not let water pool in the wood.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
- Placement: Table centrepiece in bright indirect light.
- Care of the wood: Keep it dry between waterings. It lasts for years.
