About Goudaea ospinae gruberi
Goudaea ospinae gruberi is a Colombian bromeliad once classified as Vriesea ospinae var. gruberi, reclassified into the newer genus Goudaea along with a handful of relatives that share its leaf structure. The plant forms a tight rosette of broad, strap-shaped leaves marked in bold, irregular patterns of green, cream, and burgundy.
We stock it in two grades: small at 3 inches tall by 4 inches wide, and large at 6 inches tall by 8 inches wide. The pattern reads more dramatically on the larger grade, since each leaf carries more surface for the mottling.
Unlike a Tillandsia, this bromeliad grows potted rather than mounted. We pot ours in a fast-draining mix of peat, bark, and perlite that still holds moisture around the roots.
Like most Vriesea relatives, its leaves overlap at the base to form a central cup, so a customer waters it two ways: the mix and the cup. That dual habit makes it an easy talking point for shops introducing bromeliads beyond air plants.

Keep the central cup filled with fresh water, then flush it every week or two so it does not go stagnant. Water the potting mix whenever the top inch dries, and let excess drain away fully. Bright, indirect light suits it best, because direct sun can scorch the patterned leaves. Feed it lightly, since bromeliad cups burn easily on strong fertilizer.
