About Vriesea botafogensis
Vriesea botafogensis is a Brazilian bromeliad with a leathery feel and thin, paper-like leaves. The underside of each leaf carries a scatter of purple dots. The tips curl inward slightly, giving the rosette a soft, textured look unlike a smooth Tillandsia leaf.
We currently offer it in three sizes: medium at roughly 5 inches, large at roughly 7 inches, and extra large at roughly 8 inches. These are mature plants, so expect a touch of minimal leaf damage rather than the pristine look of young stock.
This species grows two ways. Pot it in an orchid mix for the fullest growth, or mount it like a large air plant, though media gives better long-term results. Either way, it prefers standing water in its central cup over mist alone. We carry it for a limited time, while supplies last, so a shop that wants it should stock up now.
Growing Vriesea botafogensis: Care Guide
Keep the central cup filled with water and flush it regularly so it stays fresh, not stagnant. If potted, water the orchid mix as it starts to dry, then let it drain fully. Bright, indirect light works best, since the leathery leaves tolerate more light than a thin-leaved Tillandsia but still scorch in full sun. Feed it lightly and often rather than in one strong dose.
