About purpurea Spiral Select
purpurea Spiral Select is a genuinely distinct form within our purpurea lineup, unlike our numbered ranges. It’s a naturally smaller-growing form of Tillandsia purpurea, selected and propagated specifically for a spiral twist in its leaf growth rather than the straight, radiating form typical of the species.
That spiral pattern is visible from an early age. Even at seedling size, roughly an inch tall or wide, the twist is already apparent, and it becomes more pronounced as the plant matures through Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, and finally a 12-inch-wide Specimen grade.
It carries the same fragrance purpurea is known for, so a buyer gets the species’ signature scent in a form with genuine visual interest beyond the flower.
Because it’s available across such a wide size range from a single seedling to a foot-wide specimen, it works as a long-term stocking program: a shop can carry it at every price point, from an impulse-buy seedling to a premium specimen piece.
The spiral habit also makes it a strong candidate for a “collector’s pick” shelf tag, since the growth pattern reads clearly in photos and in person.
Growing purpurea Spiral Select: Care Guide
Run purpurea Spiral Select on the same xeric schedule as our other purpurea stock. Soak it 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry, taking extra care with the spiraled leaves so water doesn’t pool in the twists.
- Water: Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry.
- Light: High light with strong airflow.
- Feeding: Diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer monthly supports growth from seedling to specimen size.
- Display: The spiral habit shows best displayed alone or with room to view the twist.
- Bloom: Carries purpurea’s signature fragrance at flowering.
Feed it TillyBoost Fertilizer on a regular cycle, browse more fragrant species in our Fragrant Air Plants category, or read the air plant care guide for soak-and-dry basics. Reference: Tillandsia purpurea.
