Description
Tillandsia peiranoi is a genuinely tiny species, and a rare one. It’s known only from a handful of locations in Argentina’s Salta province. That makes wholesale availability limited by nature, not just by our own stock levels.
About Tillandsia peiranoi
In habitat, peiranoi grows on rocky outcrops and cliffs at elevation in the dry interior of northern Argentina. It’s a caulescent species, meaning it forms a visible stem. Even a flowering specimen tops out around 20 cm long, and the plant itself is often just a few centimeters across. The leaves are narrow, triangular, and densely arranged. They’re silvery-scaled and only 2 to 5 cm long, giving the whole plant a fine, textured look that’s easy to underestimate until you see it in person.
Flowering brings a nice payoff for such a small plant. Look for pale violet, tubular flowers about 14mm long, opening in a simple to branched inflorescence. They stay open for several days before fading. Growers sometimes compare its shape to Tillandsia edithae, but with a bloom closer to paleacea. That’s a useful reference point if you already know either species.
Growing Tillandsia peiranoi: Care Guide
Peiranoi uses CAM photosynthesis, the same water-conserving strategy common to xeric Tillandsia species. This means it handles infrequent watering and dry stretches better than a lush, mesic species would. Water lightly and let it dry quickly afterward. Avoid letting it sit damp, especially overnight. Bright light with some direct sun keeps growth compact and brings out the silvery leaf color that makes this species so distinctive.
