About Tillandsia Moonlight

Tillandsia Moonlight, sold here as an honest complication up front: T. x rectifolia is a documented natural hybrid between Tillandsia ionantha and Tillandsia schiedeana, native to Mexico and Costa Rica. But the trade name “Moonlight,” which we sell this plant under, gets applied by different vendors to plants described very differently: some describe bright green, soft, fuzzy leaves matching that ionantha/schiedeana parentage, while other specialty growers describe their T. x rectifolia stock as narrow, straight, and silvery instead. We’re not going to force a single tidy leaf-color story onto a name that the trade itself uses inconsistently.

What we can say reliably: at bloom, it produces bicolor flowers, reported as white-and-violet or purple-and-white depending on the individual plant, and some stock shows red coloration during flowering that traces back to the ionantha side.

Because a bulk-purchase minimum applies to this listing, it suits a shop stocking up rather than a single-plant buyer.

Grading runs from a 3-inch Small single through a 10-inch Giant single, plus small and large clump options.

Whichever leaf-color story matches the batch you receive, it’s a genuinely interesting hybrid with real documented species parentage behind the trade name.

Growing Tillandsia Moonlight: Care Guide

Run it xeric; care guidance from vendors is inconsistent on this one, but its silvery-leaved stock and ionantha parentage both point to standard xeric handling. Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry.

  • Water: Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry.
  • Light: High light with strong airflow.
  • Feeding: Diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer monthly.
  • Bloom: Bicolor white-violet or purple-white flowers; some stock reddens at bloom.
  • Ordering: Purchase of 10 or more per size required.

Feed it TillyBoost Fertilizer on a regular cycle, browse more ionantha-line hybrids in our Air Plants – Tillandsias category, or check the air plant care guide for xeric basics.
