Tillandsia ionantha Guatemala is the standard form of Tillandsia ionantha, and it is the most common air plant in the world. Most people picture this plant when they hear the words.
Hardy in almost any condition, it grows from bright direct sun to low shade. At bloom the rosette blushes red and opens violet flowers, and then the plant clusters. A single becomes a good-sized clump in one or two years.
We grade it from minis to 4-inch mature extra-larges, plus small and medium clumps. Larger grades may carry minor leaf marks, which do not affect the plant. Each size is sold in tens.
For high-volume buyers we also sell a lot of 1,000 medium plants. That is the size that fills kits, favours and event work.

Growing Tillandsia ionantha Guatemala: Care Guide
Because this is the easiest air plant we sell, the routine below is the one to teach staff first. Bright light, a weekly soak, a shake, and airflow. When a Guatemala fails, it was almost always left wet in still air.
- Light: Bright light, including some direct sun. It tolerates shade but colours in sun.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Dry within four hours.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: Glue, wire or set loose. It suits every holder in our Air Plant Displays.
- Pups: Two to four pups after bloom. Leave them on for a clump.
