About Tillandsia ionantha Mexico
Tillandsia ionantha Mexico type 2 is a Mexican form of Tillandsia ionantha. The species ranges from Mexico through Central America, and the Mexican populations tend to be smaller and more compact than the Guatemalan ones.
This form has narrow, closely set leaves, and it blushes red at bloom with violet flowers. It pups readily, so clumps form fast.
We offer it mainly in the smaller sizes, from 1-inch smalls to 3.5-inch extra-larges, plus small clumps of three or four plants and medium clumps of five or more. The photos show the actual sizes.
Each size is sold in tens. At 35 cents it is one of the least expensive plants in the catalog.
Stock it for kits, favours and terrarium work where a compact plant is wanted. The clumps are especially good value, because they ship as one unit and sell as a finished piece.
Growing Tillandsia ionantha Mexico: Care Guide
Mexican ionanthas come from drier country than the Guatemalan ones, so this form takes a little more sun and a little less water. Otherwise it is the same forgiving plant. Keep clumps well shaken, because the tight heads trap water between them. It is also a little slower to bloom than the Guatemala form, which is not a drawback in a shop, because unbloomed plants hold their shape longer.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Clumps need shaking from several angles.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: Glue to shells or cork. Small plants suit terrarium work.
- Pups: Frequent. Clumps double in a season.
