About araujei purple star

Tillandsia araujei is a species endemic to Brazil, already in our catalog in its standard green form. Purple Star is a color-form selection carrying light purple coloration at the leaf tips, most visible under strong light, on the same creeping, stem-forming habit the species is known for.

It’s genuinely small, staying around 3 inches even at maturity, and clumps along a visible stem rather than forming a single upright rosette.

At bloom, a pink flower opens from the center of the growth point.

Our stock ships as a small clump, with a mother plant carrying two to three attached pups at roughly 5-6 inches wide overall, so buyers get an established, multiplying group rather than a single stem.

Because araujei grows naturally on exposed rock faces, this form is well suited to mounting displays where its creeping habit and purple-tipped leaves can be seen along a visible run. Its compact ultimate size also means a display piece stays proportional for years, without outgrowing the mount it started on.

Growing araujei purple star: Care Guide

Run it xeric, matching the species’ exposed-rock habitat. Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry.

  • Water: Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry.
  • Light: High light with strong airflow; intensifies the purple leaf-tip color.
  • Feeding: Diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer monthly supports the clump’s pups.
  • Mounting: The creeping stem habit displays well along cork or driftwood with E-6000 Tillandsia Glue.
  • Bloom: A pink flower opens from the center of the growth point.

Feed it TillyBoost Fertilizer on a regular cycle, browse more Brazilian rock-dwelling species in our Air Plants – Tillandsias category, or check the air plant care guide for xeric basics.
