About Tillandsia x genseri
Tillandsia x genseri is a natural hybrid, not a nursery cross. It occurs where the ranges of T. argentina and T. ixioides overlap in southern South America, and the two species interbreed without any help from growers.
The multiplication sign in the name marks that origin. Naturally occurring hybrids are formally recognised in the Tillandsia genus, and genseri is one of the better known.
The plant sits neatly between its parents. It takes the fine, narrow leaves and compact habit of argentina, and the silver trichome cover and yellow flower tones of ixioides.
It stays small and offsets steadily, building into loose clusters rather than one large rosette. Massed on a shared mount, a group makes a far better display than a single plant.
Growing Tillandsia x genseri: Care Guide
Both parents come from dry, bright, cool-night country. Therefore this is an easy plant for growers who cannot supply constant warmth.
- Light: Bright light with direct morning sun. Good light keeps the clusters tight and compact.
- Water: Soak 15 minutes every 7 to 10 days. Small plants dry faster, so do not stretch it too far.
- Drying: Shake clusters out well. Water held between clustered plants is the main risk here.
- Airflow: Steady airflow, and more of it once the clump thickens.
- Temperature: Cold tolerant, from 35°F to 90°F. It handles unheated spaces well.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Feeding speeds up clustering.
- Mounting: No soil. Glue or wire small plants to cork so the cluster can spread outward.
- Pups: It offsets freely. Leave pups attached, because the clump is what sells.
