About Tillandsia Vulcan’s Throne

Tillandsia Vulcan’s Throne crosses seleriana with caput-medusae, and both parents are bulbous. The hybrid therefore has an unusually heavy, swollen base for its size.

Seleriana brings the fat, chalky pseudobulb and thick silver felting. Caput-medusae brings the snaking, channelled leaves that twist away from the bulb.

Put those together and you get a squat, architectural plant that looks carved rather than grown. Trichome cover is heavy enough to read almost white in good light.

Plants ship at 6 inches and up. The weight and the silhouette make this an easy single-plant sale rather than something that needs grouping.

Growing Tillandsia Vulcan’s Throne: Care Guide

Two bulbous parents mean one overriding rule. Therefore how you mount it matters more than how often you water.

  • Light: Bright light. Strong light tightens the leaf curl and keeps the felt bright white.
  • Water: Soak 20 to 30 minutes every 10 to 14 days. It stores water in the bulb and handles neglect well.
  • Drying: The critical rule. Mount it sideways or bulb-down and shake it out every time. Water standing in that hollow base rots the plant from the inside out.
  • Airflow: Strong airflow after watering. Aim to be dry within four hours.
  • Temperature: Comfortable from 55°F to 100°F. No frost.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly through spring and summer with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
  • Mounting: No soil, ever. Wire it at an angle on cork or driftwood so the base drains.
  • Pups: Offsets appear around the bulb after bloom. Separate at one third the size of the mother.
