This is the blooming tectorum Peru listing: the giant form from our Tillandsia tectorum Peru base listing, shipped while the plants are in spike. It is available for a limited time when a crop flowers.
Tectorum Peru is the largest tectorum, growing to 2 feet long and nearly as wide, and its inflorescence matches the scale. A stout spike rises from the silver globe with bright red bracts and violet flowers, and on a big plant it is a striking display.
The red bracts hold their colour for weeks after the flowers finish, so the show outlasts the bloom.
We grade blooming plants from smalls and mediums to larges, extra-larges and super clumps as available. A super clump in flower can carry several spikes.
A blooming Peru is the centrepiece of the tectorum range and a plant that stops customers. It is heavy for an air plant and needs a solid mount or a wide bowl, and it offsets slowly after flowering.
Growing blooming tectorum Peru: Care Guide
Tectorum lives on fog, and the Peru form is no exception. Mist lightly every few days, keep the spike dry, and give it the strongest light and best airflow you have. A plant this size holds water deep in the globe, so never soak it while in flower and never leave it wet at the centre. Wire it to a solid mount or set it in a wide, dry bowl; a big globe tips over on a small holder. After bloom, a brief dip every two or three weeks in dry weather is enough. Slow growth means a big plant is years old, so handle it as the investment it is.
- Light: Very bright light with direct sun.
- Water: Mist every few days. Dip 10 minutes every 2 to 3 weeks after bloom.
- Drying: Shake and set upright in moving air. The centre must dry.
- Airflow: Strong airflow always.
- Temperature: 35°F to 95°F. Cool nights are welcome.
- Feeding: Feed lightly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength, no more than monthly.
- Mounting: Wire to a solid mount or set in a wide bowl. It is heavy.
- Pups: Slow. One or two after bloom.
