About Tillandsia schiedeana
Tillandsia schiedeana is a slender, graceful species from Mexico and Central America. The leaves are thin, velvety and grey-green, and they arch out from a narrow base.
The flowers are yellow, which is uncommon in the genus, on a slim red-bracted spike. It blooms readily, and it clumps fast afterward.
Singles run from 4-inch smalls to 10-inch larges. Clumps run from 5 inches to specimen clumps sold as pictured. Buy ten or more and the price drops further.
Thin leaves can bend in transit, and a few tips may need trimming on arrival. That takes nothing from the plant, and new growth covers it within weeks.
At 75 cents, schiedeana is a volume plant. It fills terrarium kits, bulk orders and mixed displays, and it grows into saleable clumps faster than almost anything else we sell.
Growing Tillandsia schiedeana: Care Guide
Schiedeana grows in dry forest and on rocks across a wide range, and it is adaptable. Give it bright light and a regular dry-out, and it clumps on its own. The thin leaves dry quickly, so it is a low-risk plant. It is also a good grower in a pot of coarse bark for nurseries that prefer potted stock, and potted clumps bulk up faster than mounted ones.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Clumps need a thorough shake.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. Cool nights are fine.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding speeds up clumping.
- Mounting: Glue or wire to wood. Clumps look best hanging.
- Pups: Constant. Divide when crowded, or sell clumps whole.
