About Tillandsia rothii x concolor ‘Awesome Amber’
Tillandsia rothii x concolor ‘Awesome Amber’ crosses two Mexican silver species, and the cultivar name points at what makes it worth stocking. As the plant matures and colours up, the foliage takes on a warm amber cast rather than staying flat grey.
Rothii is the larger parent, contributing a broad symmetrical rosette and strong red bracts at bloom. Concolor tightens the form and adds density to the trichome coat.
The rosette is stiff and evenly built, with leaves that taper to fine recurving points. Trichome cover is heavy across the whole plant, so the amber tone reads as a warm glow under the silver rather than a solid colour.
We offer four sizes, from 5 inches through to 12 inches and up. Larger plants show the colour best, because it deepens with age and light.
Growing Tillandsia rothii x concolor ‘Awesome Amber’: Care Guide
Both parents come from dry Mexican country, and the amber is light-driven. Therefore grow it bright.
- Light: High light, including direct morning sun. In shade you get a plain grey plant and lose the reason you bought it.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days. It stores water well and forgives a missed week.
- Drying: Invert and shake. The tight rosette centre traps water against the base.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each watering.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 50°F to 100°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly in spring and summer with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Feeding deepens both the amber and the bract colour.
- Mounting: No soil. Larger grades are heavy enough to need wiring rather than glue.
- Pups: Offsets follow bloom. Separate at one third the size of the mother, or leave them to cluster.
