Description
About Tillandsia rothii seedling
Tillandsia rothii is a large silver Mexican species, and these are seedlings rather than finished plants. At 4 inches they are well established but still years away from full size.
That makes them a growing-on proposition rather than a retail-ready one. For a nursery with bench space, seedlings are the cheapest route into a species that commands real money at maturity.
Even young, the character shows. Leaves are stiff and evenly silvered, forming a tidy symmetrical rosette that broadens steadily as the plant develops.
Mature rothii produces a substantial branched spike with strong red bracts, and it is a parent behind several hybrids we carry, including our Awesome Amber cross.
Growing Tillandsia rothii seedling: Care Guide
Seedlings dry faster than mature plants and grow faster when fed. Therefore treat them a little more attentively than finished stock.
- Light: High light, including direct morning sun. Strong light keeps young rosettes compact rather than stretched.
- Water: Soak 15 to 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days, slightly more often than for a mature plant.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Even at this size the leaf bases cup water.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 55°F to 100°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Feeding makes the largest difference at the seedling stage.
- Mounting: No soil. Grow them loose in trays while small, and mount once they gain size.
- Timeline: Expect several years to reach flowering size. Price and plan accordingly.
