About Tillandsia ‘Oddball’

Tillandsia ‘Oddball’ crosses T. exserta and T. velutina. Collectors prize it for its dramatic, twisting shape and soft, velvety texture.

Its long, slender leaves curve and twist, a trait from the exserta side. But unlike exserta’s stiff, scurfy leaves, ‘Oddball’ feels soft and fuzzy, closer to velutina.

It’s caulescent and can grow over 2 feet long. The rosette is loose and a little chaotic, which is exactly how it earned its name.

Foliage runs silvery-green to sage green most of the time. Under high light, or as it nears its bloom cycle, it can blush pink, peach, or soft red.

When it flowers, the spike stays low and suppressed, with bright pink or red bracts around tubular purple flowers. This is a specimen plant, and the exact plant shown is the one you’ll receive.

Because it’s a named hybrid with documented parentage on both sides, ‘Oddball’ gives a shop a real story to tell rather than an unlabeled seedling cross.

Growing Tillandsia ‘Oddball’: Care Guide

Run it mesic. Its parentage makes it hardy, but it prefers a balance of airflow and moisture. Soak 5-10 days, then invert to drain.

  • Water: Soak 5-10 days, then invert and shake dry.
  • Light: Bright to high light; stronger light brings out the pink and red blush.
  • Feeding: Diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer monthly supports the blush color and bloom.
  • Form: Caulescent growth to 2’+; give it room to sprawl rather than crowding it.
  • Bloom: Suppressed spike with pink or red bracts and purple tubular flowers.

Feed it TillyBoost Fertilizer on a regular cycle, compare it with our Tillandsia velutina parent, or check the air plant care guide for mesic basics.
