About Tillandsia myosura
Tillandsia myosura is a small species from Bolivia and Argentina, and it is easy to recognise. The stems are smooth and free of the usual trichome fuzz, which gives the plant a clean, unusual look.
The name means “mouse tail,” and the shape fits. Thin leaves alternate along a slender stem, and the whole plant curves like a tail.
The flowers are small and pale yellow to cream, and they are fragrant. They open on a short stalk from the stem tip.
It belongs to the Diaphoranthema group with usneoides and tricholepis. Like them it branches and clumps, and older clumps become tangled mounds of tails.
We offer large mature plants. Myosura is a collector’s plant and a terrarium plant; it is small, distinctive and easy, and it is rarely offered in quantity.
Growing Tillandsia myosura: Care Guide
Myosura grows in dry Andean scrub at altitude, often on cacti and shrubs. So it wants bright light, cool nights and quick drying. It is well behaved and forgiving, provided it never sits wet. Mist rather than soak in humid weather, because the tangled clumps dry slowly at the centre.
- Light: Bright light with some direct sun.
- Water: Soak 15 minutes every 10 to 14 days, or mist weekly.
- Drying: Shake and hang. Thin stems dry fast.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 35°F to 95°F. It tolerates cold well.
- Feeding: Feed lightly every 4 to 6 weeks with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer.
- Mounting: Glue to a twig or cork and let the tails hang.
- Pups: Along the stem. Leave them on for a clump.
