About Tillandsia werdermannii
Tillandsia werdermannii is a compact Brazilian species with an unusually rigid build. Leaves are short, thick and stiff, recurving hard away from the centre so the plant looks almost spiky.
Trichome cover is heavy and even. The plant holds a consistent grey-silver tone rather than greening up under cultivation, which makes it reliable on a retail bench.
It offsets steadily rather than growing large. Older plants build into dense clusters, and clumps hold their shape well because the leaves are stiff enough to support each other.
We offer four sizes, from 4 inches through to 12 inches and up. The larger grades are usually multiple plants grown together rather than one big rosette.
Growing Tillandsia werdermannii: Care Guide
Thick leaves and heavy trichomes signal a plant built for drought. Therefore water sparingly and light generously.
- Light: High light, including direct morning sun. Strong light keeps the form tight and the silver bright.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Thick leaves store water well.
- Drying: Invert and shake, particularly on clumps. Trapped water between packed plants is the main risk.
- Airflow: Strong airflow, and more of it as the cluster thickens.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 45°F to 95°F. Cool nights suit it.
- Feeding: Feed monthly through the growing season with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: No soil. Glue or wire it to cork, and allow room for the cluster to widen.
- Pups: It offsets freely. Leave pups attached, because clumps sell better than singles.
