Tillandsia romeroi var. gruberi is a rare, glossy, soft-leaved species from the cloud forests of central-eastern Colombia. It gives wholesale buyers a genuine collector rarity to add to a specialty display.
About Romeroi var. Gruberi
This variety is native to the mountains between Duitama and Charala near Bogotá, Colombia. It grows epiphytically on low bushes and trees at elevations between 1,800 and 2,200 meters. At flowering it forms a broad funnel rosette, with narrow, three-angled leaves reaching roughly 30 cm long. The leaf sheaths carry deep dark-violet coloring. The upper third of the foliage shows abundant dark-violet spotting, giving the plant a striking two-tone look even before it blooms.
When it flowers, the bloom itself is pale violet with white edges. The real showpiece is the floral bract: a strong, shiny crimson partially covered in a white waxy layer. In its native cloud forest habitat, those bracts hold a slimy liquid, a clue to just how humid a climate this species evolved in. That cloud-forest origin is worth knowing for any buyer setting expectations with their own retail customers about this plant’s moisture needs. Its glossy foliage alone makes it a worthwhile display piece even between bloom cycles.
