Description

Aechmea chantinii is widely celebrated as the “Amazonian Zebra Plant,” and the cultivar ‘Black’ takes this classic to a dramatic new level. It is highly valued for its unique, intense coloration and stately, architectural form.

Foliage Color: The defining characteristic is the deep, moody coloration of its leaves. Under optimal bright light, the base color is a striking dark burgundy, chocolate-brown, or near-black overlaying the typical green undertones. This dramatically darker pigment distinguishes it from the standard chantinii form.

Banding: The intense dark foliage provides a spectacular contrast to the trademark horizontal “zebra” stripes. These stripes are made up of highly visible, frosted silver-white or grey scales (trichomes) that stand out sharply against the black background, creating a luminous, graphic pattern.

Size: ‘Black’ is a medium to large bromeliad, typically reaching a mature size of 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) in diameter and similar height.

To achieve and maintain the richest, darkest black-burgundy color, this cultivar needs strong, filtered light. Insufficient light will cause the leaves to revert to a duller green-brown hue, losing its signature “wow” factor. It is relatively hardy and is often used as a stunning accent in warm, tropical landscapes or as an impressive indoor specimen.
